Entries from December 2008
Jack joined us for breakfast and needless to say, the boy appreciates his scrambled eggs like none other. He and Ben took turns stuffing their faces until the eggs ran out, then they turned their attention to chugging their milk and attacking the Karma Puffs. After all, what’s more fun than eating when you’re hanging out with your friends?

Ben’s learning how to speak, and part of that is learning how to show respect for your elders. For example, as his prized mother, he has aptly named me, “Ass.” Listen here:
UPDATE: Ben says Mom-Mom-Mom-Mom now. Phew.

Ben has a special reaction to seeing Lani. He likes to give the grump face and shake his head ‘no.’ Here’s a video of how she’s introducing positive reinforcement into their relationship. Owen enjoys it….but then again, what does Owen NOT enjoy??

Well, it shouldn’t surprise us anymore at this point. It’s Texas, and it’s December. Of COURSE it’s 70 degrees. It’s not like it doesn’t get cold here, though. On Friday it was 55 degrees…down 25 degrees from the day before.
Enough about the temperature, though. The point I’m getting at is that we spend all our time outside, or else we duck for cover and stay inside all day. None of this “inside/outside” moderation stuff. We’re all or nothing. We just rounded out an awesome visit from Ben’s cousin Owen (who incidentally comes with his parents, but that’s not the point). Ben spent a couple days looking for “Aunt” and “O,” but eventually conceded that he was bound to be stuck with boring old mom instead. Luckily we can still supplement our days with Jack in order to shake things up.
Ben’s language is coming to fruition. He has his trusty “this?” which really sounds more like “dis?” and that gets him through the day, but he also calls for his parents when seeking help, or just looking for some attention. This is not to say that he calls us “Mom” and “Dad” though. It sounds a little more along the lines of “ass.” Theories abound (he’s trying to say ‘Allison’, maybe it developed from saying ‘Auntie’ or ‘guys’, etc.), the result is that Stephan and I both now answer to the name “Ass.” Fantastic. I have a video of me trying to correct this pattern, but I already reached my vimeo quota until Tuesday. Check back then. Instead, here’s a picture of Ben’s favorite part of Thanksgiving: the onion dip.

Ben is getting better at stacking blocks. Check it out! (Auntie Lani built the base of the tower, in case you’re wondering.)

Cousins are awesome! Owen came to visit for Thanksgiving. The parents were totally lame and all got really sick, but the babies managed to remain healthy and come up with all kinds of fun ways to amuse themselves. After Ben read to Owen for a little while, they discovered this new game. Ben is perfecting his cause/effect relationships, and Owen is totally loving the light that magically goes on and off all by itself.
More videos of the boys at play coming soon.
